In Memory

Darrell Callis

Darrell Callis

Passed away 6.15.2011

Survived by his wife Laida, son, step children, grand children

From Ellyn Daugherty Kopel:

Darrell was so important in my life. Definitely helped shape me into the person I am today. My love of nature and science and hearty, deep discussions were cultivated by him. It was really great that these reunion pages gave me a chance to talk with him before he passed. Darrell was really happily married and enjoyed his life. It is sad he is gone but he made my life a lot more meaningful.

So sad to hear of Darrell's passing.  I too got to talk with Darrell a few months ago.  He was looking for a mutual friend from Taylor Middle School. We talked for a bit but he didn't mention he was sick.  Later I did get to speak with him through this website and I commented on his dog.  :)

I will always remember Darrell and the memories we had together at Mills.  My thoughts are with his family at this time.

It is with great sadness that I learned of Darrel's Passing as well as so many of our other classmates. Tends to give me a sense of my own mortality. I knew Darrell as "Duke" and we got to be close in our final years at Mills High. I remember spending many a night in "Dukes Hut", a converted living area over his Mom's garage. I used to make him laugh hysterically when I would do my imitation of Actor Walter Brennan (The Real Mcoy's). He would say "Rouss, do the Amos McCoy imitation" And I would say "Gol dern u Pepinus" We would all laugh. We would sit around and listen to Steve Pelettas stories and jokes, joine in by Tom Gillespe, who I understand also passed and Rich Baer, who we called Gimlee. I saw Duke at a Giants game a few years after high school and he was in the Navy. I'm sure he had an angle going.

Those were the good ole days. I will miss not seeing Duke and the others at the reunion.

God Bless his family.

I'm not a Mills alumni but a local San Carlos gal, class of '72. I met Darrell during our days at HP and continued to stay in contact with him until he passed. He was one in a million, they broke the mold. I echo Ellyn's memories of Darrell, he enriched my life and taught me so much through the 30 years we knew each other. I'll miss him more than you can imagine and still can't believe he is gone.

Darrell and I touched base through this website and I sent prayers for his health and a promise to dance with him at the reunion . . .  but, I guess we can dance in heaven. . .
May God bring comfort to Darrell's family and friends,
Amen.

Hugs and prayers always,
Terri
